Christopher Nolan

Box Office Preview: 'Dark Knight Rises' Earns Massive $25 Mil in Advance Sales

Christopher Nolan's brooding and acclaimed Batman trilogy is going out in style. Pre-release tracking for The Dark Knight Rises is so big that the movie should have no trouble besting the $158.4 million opening of The Dark Knight to score the best domestic debut of all time for a 2D pic. The next big question: Just how high will the number end up?

From Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, Dark Knight Rises has already racked up $25 million in advance ticket sales, one of the best numbers of all time and underscoring the keen interest in the film, which returns Christian Bale in the title role. Newcomers to Nolan's blockbuster franchise include villain Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anne Hathaway and Marion Cottilard. Returning alongside Bale are Gary Oldman, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman. Liam Neeson, who starred in Batman Begins, also is featured.

One veteran box office observer believes Dark Knight Rises could debut in the $185 million to $195 million range; Warners insiders say $170 million is a good starting point. "Anything above that is going into unknown territory," one insider said.

Earlier this summer, Disney and Marvel's The Avengers posted the biggest three-day opening of all time at the domestic box office when grossing $207.4 million. The No. 2 opening of all time belongs to  Warners' Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which grossed $169.2 million.

'American Reunion' Tops Home Entertainment Charts, Previous 'Batman' Films Make Strong Showing

Universal Studios Home Entertainment’s American Reunion topped the national home video sales charts the week ending July 15 as the industry continued to suffer through a dearth of high-profile new theatrical product. The latest installment in the American Pie franchise grossed $56.7 million in theaters and follows a string of direct-to-video sequels to 1999’s original American Pie. Photos: 'American Reunion' Premiere: Red Carpet Arrivals On the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks overall disc sales, the raunchy comedy knocked Sony Pictures’ 21 Jump Street out of the No. 1 spot it had held for the

Theater Community Strikes Back at 'Three's Company' Legal Dispute

New York -- The Off Broadway world-premiere production of David Adjmi's 3C closed as scheduled on July 14, but the controversy over the playwright's barbed deconstruction of 1970s ABC sitcom Three's Company continues. An open letter from leading members of the New York theatre community blasts the claim by legal reps for Dlt Entertainment, owner of the longrunning sitcom, that Adjmi's play is an act of copyright infringement that damages their client's property. The letter maintains instead that the play is a satirical work, and like all parody, should be recognized as protected speech under the First Amendment. Signatories of

Rashida Jones Teams Up With Trendy Fashion Label Band of Outsiders for Film Screening

Invites have been sent for a private screening of the Sundance hit Celeste and Jesse Forever, starring Rashida Jones and Andy Sandberg, which happened to pique our interest since it's co-hosted by Sony and the cool fashion label Band of Outsiders. It's obvious Rashida, who also wrote the film, is a friend of the brand. The actress wore the label last September to a New York event, and she's paired Band of Outsider pieces with other divergent brands -- like putting a Boo skirt with a Commes des Garcons jacket and an American Apparel top. She also wore it while

Do USA Viewers Want Quality TV?

This story first appeared in the July 27 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. When Oscar nominee Sigourney Weaver announced she would make her television series debut in Political Animals, a heavily serialized, darkly political cable project, few would have looked for it on USA Network. Long known as the home of such light-hearted, quippy procedural hits as Burn Notice and Covert Affairs, the NBCUniversal-owned network has found an almost fail-proof formula for delivering ratings and revenue, the CBS equivalent for cable. But now its executives, led by co-presidents Jeff Wachtel and Chris McCumber, are eager

How Channing Tatum Conquered Hollywood

This story first appeared in the July 27 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Magic Mike proved it: Channing Tatum has mastered all the right moves. His winning 2012 trifecta -- in just over four months, he has segued, seemingly effortlessly, from the romance of The Vow to the comedy of 21 Jump Street to the raunchy social commentary of Mike -- has made him Hollywood's most in-demand actor under 35. As Tatum, 32, plots his next move, studio execs are lining up in hope of snaring a spot on the former stripper's increasingly crowded dance card. Photos: 'Magic Mike': Channing

'The Dark Knight Rises' Politics: Is Christopher Nolan's Batman Series Liberal or Conservative?

When Rush Limbaugh on Tuesday accused The Dark Knight Rises of taking a subconscious shot at Mitt Romney, with its villain Bane a homophone for the Gop presidential candidate's long-time venture capital firm Bain, it created quite the stir -- and received more than a few mocking laughs. But while his accusations were more than a stretch -- Bane was created in 1993, and selected as the villain long before Romney was the obvious Gop candidate -- Limbaugh did touch on what is becoming a more serious debate: what are the political messages in Christopher Nolan's Batman films? Rotten Tomatoes Shuts Down 'Dark Knight Rises' Comments

Rotten Tomatoes, the popular movie review aggregator, has suspended negative comments from reviews of The Dark Knight Rises, The Associated Press reports. The site's editor, Matt Atchity, said it was the first time user comments had been yanked from Rotten Tomatoes but that postings would be restored by week's end. "The job of policing the comments became more than my staff could handle for that film, so we stopped the comments altogether," he explained. "It just got to be too much hate based on reactions to reviews of movies that people hadn't even seen." Video: 'Dark Knight Rises'
