Nicollette Sheridan's Lawyers Back In Court
Actress Nicollette Sheridan's lawyers were back in court on Tuesday to fight an attempt by her former Desperate Housewives TV bosses to block her chance for a retrial in a wrongful termination lawsuit.
The blonde beauty launched a $6 million (£3.75 million) legal battle against the TV drama's creator Marc Cherry and executives at Touchstone Television Production after claiming her character, Edie Britt, was killed off because she complained to producers about an altercation between herself and Cherry, during which the writer/producer allegedly struck her.
Cherry and the TV heads testified in court that the decision to axe Sheridan's character was made months before the alleged incident, but the Los Angeles jury couldn't reach a unanimous decision and in March, Judge Elizabeth White declared the case a mistrial after a battery charge against Cherry was dismissed.
Sheridan's legal team was granted the chance to present the case again at a retrial, and a date was set for 10 September.
However, Touchstone bosses have been appealing to a higher judge to bar Sheridan from trying her argument again and they are asking for the case to be completely dismissed, insisting the dispute is simply the result of a contract option not being exercised, according to Eonline.com.
A judge will decide on Friday whether Sheridan can proceed with her new trial. »
Sacha Baron Cohen Under Attack For Movie Portrayal Of Arabs
Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen has come under fire from bosses at an Arab-American group for mocking their culture and drawing attention to the "negative stereotype" against their community in his new movie The Dictator.
The British funnyman, known for his outrageous onscreen personas, has been up to his usual headline-grabbing antics of late as his latest outrageous alter-ego Admiral General Aladeen, the leader of fictional Arab country Wadiya.
Cohen caused mayhem on the opening day of the Cannes Film Festival in France on Wednesday when he arrived at the event in character, on a yacht, and pretended to murder George Clooney's ex-girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis.
He also famously caused a ruckus on the red carpet at the Academy Awards in February when he dumped an urn of white powder all over TV presenter Ryan Seacrest's tuxedo.
But Nadia Tonova, the director of the National Network for Arab American Communities, insists she and many other Arabs aren't laughing at his unruly behaviour - because his portrayal of Admiral General Aladeen reflects badly on them, particularly at a time when the threat of terrorism is still a big worry to Americans.
Tonova tells Eonline.com, "I have not seen the film, but based on the trailer and interviews that I have seen him do in character, it really seems to be that it's perpetuating a negative stereotype against Arabs and therefore Arab-Americans.
"And I feel it's harmful to the discourse, especially these days when we are seeing the number of profiling incidents here in the U.S. against Arab-Americans." »

Jailed actor Lane Garrison is serving time behind bars constructively - he's teaching his fellow inmates how to write scripts.
The Prison Break star is currently in custody following a domestic violence arrest last month, and he's making the most of his jail time by offering others tips on acting and screenwriting.

The website reports Garrison is so committed to giving the inmates he has befriended on the course a boost upon their release, he has offered to continue mentoring the prisoners after he has been released. »
Sharon Stone Was Threatened Over Charity Work
Movie star Sharon Stone has revealed her charity work has been dangerous at times - she has received death threats for her do-good work.
The Basic Instinct star admits she won a lot of enemies when she first became one of Hollywood's charity faces - because many people felt she was simply trying to boost her career.
She tells Life & Style magazine, "When I started doing charity work, people thought I was only doing it for press - they called me the new Zsa Zsa Gabor. The adversity was awful.
"My life was threatened; someone wanted to kill me. It was serious. I know what it's like to be bullied, but charity work is meaningful to me, so I didn't give up."
Now a leading spokeswoman for the American Foundation for AIDS Research, Stone has made a name for herself by demanding cash from rich guests at swanky celebrity auctions - and she insists she's glad she no longer receives death threats for trying to do good: "It was a hard time in my life. I had to be careful." »

No further details were available as WENN went to press.

Will Smith Gets Sporty With British Olympics Hopefuls
Will Smith was put through his paces by athletes from Britain's Olympics team in London on Wednesday.
The actor is in the U.K. for the London premiere of his new film Men in Black 3, and he took time out from the promo trail to show off his sporting side during an exercise class with some of the country's fittest men and women.
The star shot hoops on the basketball court with Olympics team captain Drew Sullivan, before jokingly tackling the hurdles with Perri Shakes-Drayton. He also sparred with heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua and attempted the long jump with Yamile Aldama.
And despite his buff image, Smith insisted he wasn't athletic until he began working out for his movie career.
He told reporters, "I've always loved sports - I love basketball and I love boxing. But I've never considered myself an athlete. I was a little bit goofy until I was about 14 or 15. The first time I ever saw myself look good athletically was in the first Bad Boys.
"(Director) Michael Bay shot me running in slow-motion and I thought, 'Hey, that doesn't look half bad' but other than that, I've never been really athletic."
Smith also revealed he would attend the Olympic Games in London over the summer. »
Jim Nabors Undergoing Heart Surgery
Veteran singer/actor Jim Nabors is set to undergo heart surgery later this month.
The former star of 1960s TV series Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. was diagnosed with aortic stenois - a narrowing of the aortic heart valve - earlier this year and he's due to have a replacement operation at a Honolulu, Hawaii medical centre on 29 May.
The 81 year old tells the National Enquirer, "It's about a three-hour surgery, and if all goes well, I should have to spend only one night in the hospital. This is less invasive than having to open my chest, but anything that has to do with the heart area is always a bit scary, especially at my age."
The actor has been suffering with declining health in recent years - he received a liver transplant in 1994 and last year, he was hospitalised with a throat infection.
The Andy Griffith Show star's latest crisis will force Nabors to bow out of his annual Memorial Day tradition of performing his hit tune Back Home Again at the Indianapolis 500 car race, a ritual he's kept since 1987. »
Sacha Baron Cohen Limits Interviews To Avoid Lawsuits
Actor Sacha Baron Cohen has been forced to cut down on his media appearances in recent years to limit his potential for lawsuits.
Throughout his career, the funnyman has largely shied away from the press, only conducting interviews as one of his many alter egos like Borat, Bruno or Admiral General Aladeen, from his upcoming movie The Dictator.
But on Wednesday the British comedian sat down for a rare talk with U.S. breakfast show Today, shot live on location at the Cannes Film Festival, and confessed he rarely ditches his outrageous onscreen personas to protect his films.
In hit comedy Borat, Cohan plays titular and fictitious Kazakhstan-born personality Borat Sagdiyev, who travels across the U.S. with the hope of meeting Baywatch beauty Pamela Anderson, and much of the movie features unscripted vignettes of the star interviewing and interacting with real-life Americans, who are completely unaware they're being filmed for a big budget studio release.
And because of the nature of most of his projects, Cohen admits he has been forced to stay in character during all promotional appearances, so angry fans don't realise they were at the brunt of a joke and pursue legal action.
He said, "The movies that I did up 'til now, they involve real people and so we've wanted to limit the exposure for lawsuits. I mean at the moment I think I have the Guinness World Record for the most-sued actor in history. But basically if people saw that I was me and that Borat was not a real person beforehand, they could injunct the movie and shut the movie down. So this is a different kind of movie (and I'm finally able to talk)."
The 65th annual Cannes Film Festival kicked off in the south of France on Wednesday with Cohen making a grand entrance and causing mayhem as he pretended to murder George Clooney's ex-girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis while dressed as The Dictator. »

Elijah Wood's Sneaky Plan To Avoid Fans
Elijah Wood is so desperate to attend this year's Comic-Con event, he is planning on wearing a masked superhero costume to avoid fan attention.
The Lord of the Rings star is a huge science fiction and comic enthusiast, but finds it hard to take in the annual convention as he is always mobbed by film buffs.
But he's tempted to attend this year's event in San Diego, California in July by taking inspiration from fellow actor Simon Pegg and disguising himself with an elaborate costume.
He tells movie site Collider.com, "It's weird, in my daily life, I can go anywhere without a problem. But, that's such a concentrated amalgam of those folks, that it's difficult... But, it's really hard 'cause I want to (attend).
"I've been there so many times, and I did walk the floor the first time I went. We were there to promote Rings before it came out, and I did walk the floor and it was radical. I checked out all the toy booths. It was awesome, meeting artists. But, after the first movie came out, it was pretty apparent that I couldn't do that again.
"And I've thought about getting a costume or a mask and walking around that way, but it's a little difficult. A bunch of people do that. I think Simon Pegg does that. I've definitely thought about doing that." »
Selena Gomez Taught How To Smoke For Bad Girl Role
Selena Gomez was given a lesson in cigarette smoking so she could play a bad girl in racy new movie Spring Breakers.
The 19-year-old former Disney star sheds her squeaky-clean image to play a wild college student in the film, but admits she needed a few tips on how to embrace her dark side.
She tells Interview magazine, "I was getting kind of repetitive in terms of the roles I was picking, and I really wanted to do something that was completely different. It was a mark thing for me - like, 'This is what I want to be doing.' I want to be taking myself seriously as an actress...
"This was definitely a stretch. I mean, I'd never smoked a cigarette before in my entire life. It was really funny - they had to show me how to do it." »
Will Smith Embarrassed By Son's Alien Question To Barack Obama
Will Smith was left red-faced after his son asked U.S. President Barack Obama if aliens are real during a visit to the White House.
The Men in Black star banned his son Jaden from asking the extra-terrestrial question ahead of a guided tour of the President's home with his family, but the cheeky 13-year-old actor couldn't resist defying his dad.
The youngster popped the question as Obama showed the family around the "situation room" - where the president holds meetings during a crisis - and the U.S. leader was happy to answer him.
Smith tells BBC Radio 1 host Chris Moyles, "The night before Jaden had said to me, 'Dad, I gotta ask the president about the aliens,' and I'm like, 'Dude, no, it's not cool. It's embarrassing. Do not ask the president!' So we get into the situation room and Jaden gets the look in his eyes and he leans over to me and asks, 'Dad, What's my punishment?'
"And Barack is starting to talk about this situation room and Jaden says, 'Excuse me Mr. President?' and I'm like, 'Hey, Barack man, listen?' and Barack said, 'Don't tell me.' And in perfect form - and this is why he is the president - he stopped and looked at Jaden and said, 'The aliens, right? Ok, I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of extra-terrestrials but I can tell you if there had been a top secret meeting and if there would have been a discussion about it, it would have taken place in this room.'" »
Charlize Theron Had No Teeth As A Kid
Charlize Theron was left with "fangs" as a child after several rounds of antibiotics rotted her teeth.
The stunning actress is hailed as one of Hollywood's greatest beauties, but admits she was far from attractive as a child after she was struck down with jaundice.
Doctors put her on so many drugs to try and combat the condition, her milk teeth fell out and left her with a gummy smile.
She tells Britain's The Sun, "My early childhood was quite devastating. I had no teeth until I was 11. I had these fangs because I had jaundice when I was a kid and I was put on so many antibiotics that my teeth rotted. They had to cut them out.
"So I never had milk teeth. That was tough, you know, being in school having photos taken while I was pretending I had teeth. It was hideous." »

Tom Cruise Given Flying Lessons By Sydney Pollack
Tom Cruise learned to fly planes after he was gifted with a course of lessons by late moviemaker Sydney Pollack.
The pair became great friends after working together on 1993 film The Firm and Cruise reveals Pollack helped him indulge his passion for aviation with a very special present.
He tells Playboy magazine, "I always wanted to fly, and that was one of the reasons I did Top Gun. I just never had the time to learn. Then I met Sydney Pollack. I was 19 or 20... We talked about a big mutual interest that we had in aviation because I knew he flew. Sydney became a lifelong friend, and when we finished The Firm together in 1993 or 1994, he gave me flying lessons as a gift.
"He said, 'I know how much you love flying. Take the time, right now, and do it, because otherwise you'll never get to it.' I had two kids by then, and I worked all the time. In a few months I had my instrument rating, and a little while after that I had my commercial rating.
"I trained mostly in aerobatics... I was doing rolls, loops, all kinds of aerobatic manoeuvres. My first airplane was called a Pitts, and then I flew a Marchetti. This was all in preparation to fly the Warbird, the P-51."
Cruise also reveals he bought his favourite plane in 2000 and named it after his wife, Katie Holmes, adding, "I searched all over the world for my P-51 and found it in 2000. It's called Kiss Me Kate, which covers two things I love most, my wife and movies." »

He was given the all-clear last year and has now signed up to appear in a public service announcement (PSA) for the Oral Cancer Foundation, a non-profit organisation set up to help those struck down with the disease.
In the PSA, which will debut in June, Douglas urges Americans to undergo annual screenings for oral cancer.
The charity's founder, Brian Hill, says, "The Foundation is indebted to Michael Douglas for partnering with us in the battle against oral cancer. Michael is a highly visible, well known actor, and a consummate professional.
"Those qualities, when coupled with his personal cancer experience, yield a respected voice to this fight. His willingness right from the beginning of his journey, to openly talk about his difficult personal experience with oral cancer on TV and in print, has certainly created awareness in the public of a cancer too few have even heard of." »

Billy Bob Thornton 'Blew' Angelina Jolie Marriage Over Insecurities
Billy Bob Thornton was left feeling like the Phantom Of The Opera over the barrage of criticism he received following his marriage to Angelina Jolie, and blames their split on his own lack of confidence.
The pair was Hollywood's odd couple when they got wed in 2000 shortly after meeting on the set of their movie Pushing Tin a year earlier.
They courted controversy with their public displays of affection on the red carpet and by wearing vials containing each other's blood around their neck.
Thornton and Jolie split in 2002, and the actor cites his own insecurities over dating the renowned beauty as the reason he "blew" the marriage.
He tells America's Nightline show, "I blew it because I didn't think I was good enough for her. She has one way she wanted to live her life and I had another way to live mine and I was just too insecure.
"I did feel like the Phantom of the Opera hiding in the catacombs... People have actually said that I didn't deserve to be with her." »

Sacha Baron Cohen's Gun-toting Entrance At Cannes
Sacha Baron Cohen continued to cause mayhem as his alter-ego The Dictator on Wednesday when he arrived at the Cannes Film Festival in France and pretended to murder George Clooney's ex-girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis.
The British funnyman has been attending a string of premieres and red carpet events as Admiral General Aladeen, the star's latest madcap creation from his upcoming movie.
Dressed in a white naval jacket and tiny shorts, and wearing a huge fake beard, Cohen laughed and smiled for the cameras as he roared into the the dock outside the lavish Eden Roc hotel on a small yacht while wildly waving a fake gun in the air.
He then frolicked with Italian model Canalis on deck, rubbing sun cream into her legs before pouring champagne into her mouth. The pair then acted out a fake fight, which ended with the beauty disappearing and one of the character's henchmen bringing out a 'body' in a black bag - which was then thrown overboard.
Cohen carried on his promo drive for a photo opportunity in front of the famous Carlton Hotel in Cannes, dressed in riding gear on the back of a camel, before falling backwards off the beast while surrounded by weapon-toting beauties in military uniform.
The funnyman famously caused a scene at the Oscars in February when he dumped an urn of white powder on E! News host Ryan Seacrest's tuxedo.

Christopher Eccleston Wants More Theatre Roles
British actor Christopher Eccleston is turning his focus to the stage as he devotes the next phase of his career to the theatre.
Eccleston got his start performing classics by Shakespeare and Chekhov before appearing in a series of big-budget films, including 28 Days Later, Gone in 60 Seconds and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
While he has enjoyed his Hollywood success, Eccleston admits his burning ambition is to be onstage.
He tells Britain's Daily Telegraph, "I've neglected theatre. That's a shame. It's why I went to train as an actor. And for the next 20 or 30 years I'm going to do more and more of it. That's the plan. I'm determined!"
Eccleston was inspired to become an actor after working as a young usher and seeing Sir Anthony Hopkins performing at London's Olivier Theatre.
He recalls, "I was an impressionable student and I'll never forget seeing Anthony Hopkins as Lambert Le Roux (in Pravda) and Ian McKellen playing Coriolanus. I had a really extraordinary experience of seeing Hopkins dominate the Olivier then eat beans on toast in the canteen. That was fascinating - seeing the transition, the quietness of him, then the hugeness of him in the same day. What solidified in my mind was the thought, 'If you play a big classical role on the Olivier stage, you can go no higher in British theatre.' The Olivier was where I always wanted to work."
Eccleston's dream is soon to be realised - he is starring as Creon in an upcoming production of Antigone at London's Olivier Theatre. »
Alfred Hitchcock Was In The Frame To Direct 007
Alfred Hitchcock was James Bond creator Ian Fleming's top pick to direct the first 007 film, according to a newly discovered letter.
In a telegram sent to mutual friend and novelist Eric Ambler in 1959, Fleming asks whether the horror master was available to make Thunderball.
The message reads, "Would Hitchcock be interested in directing?"
Fleming goes on to outline the film's plot in the telegram, which has been published on website Letters Of Note, but Hitchcock turned down the offer because he was busy working on Psycho.
Filmmaker Terence Young stepped in after it was decided Dr. No would be the first Bond movie, starring Sir Sean Connery as the superspy.
Thunderball later became the fourth Bond movie in the series. »
Sir Michael Caine 'Locked In Dressing Room'
Sir Michael Caine was locked in his dressing room overnight after falling asleep on the set of his new movie, according to a U.K. report.
The Italian Job actor was filming in the Old Loews theatre in New Orleans, Louisiana for upcoming thriller Now You See Me when he decided to take a nap in a makeshift dressing room.
But he received a nasty shock when he woke up, as the staff had left for the evening and had locked him in. The nervous actor reportedly shouted for help, and was only rescued when a carpenter heard his cries the following morning.
A source tells Britain's Daily Mirror, "It had been a long day of filming and Michael decided to slip upstairs to a makeshift dressing area and catch 40 winks. Unfortunately he was asleep for some time and failed to hear directors calling a wrap. Production all assumed he was safely outside in his trailer, and therefore locked up for the night.
"When Michael eventually woke up, he realised he was locked in. His mobile phone was in his trailer and there was no electricity in the attic, meaning he couldn't see a thing. It was pitch black. Michael started shouting for help but no one could hear him.
"It was only when an on-set carpenter who had left his tools in the theatre went to do some maintenance work the following morning that he was discovered. It's fair to say Michael wasn't in the best of moods - although he was grateful to have been found."
A spokesperson for the British actor refused to comment. »

The Hollywood actor takes on the lead role of rock star Stacee Jaxx in the upcoming big screen adaptation of the popular stage musical, which features a number of classic hits including Def Leppard's Pour Some Sugar on Me.
Cruise has now revealed his rendition of the British band's song was the first scene he shot for the film, and he had to do it with the stars of Def Leppard watching on set.
He tells Playboy Magazine, "I was down in Miami, recording different songs, and Adam (director Adam Shankman) called and said, 'Def Leppard's coming by the set.' I said, 'Man, that's cool'. Then I paused. 'Wait, I'm rehearsing their song tomorrow.' And he's like, 'Yeah!'... So we started right in the deep end, and that was the first scene I shot in the movie. It's a great song, and I grew up listening to them... All the crew was watching them watching me...
"The lead singer, Joe Elliott, points at me and goes, 'F**k you! F**k you!' Then I saw big smiles on their faces, and I realised I'd gotten their stamp. It was a very cool moment. It was important they knew I was honouring their music and not making fun of them." »

Aaron Sorkin To Adapt Steve Jobs Biography
Aaron Sorkin has signed up to bring Steve Jobs' life to the big screen with a screenplay based on a hit book about the late Apple boss.
The Oscar-winning screenwriter will adapt Walter Isaacson's authorised biography, which was Amazon's best-selling title of 2011.
A statement from Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures, reads, "Steve Jobs' story is unique: he was one of the most revolutionary and influential men not just of our time but of all time.
"There is no writer working in Hollywood today who is more capable of capturing such an extraordinary life for the screen than Aaron Sorkin; in his hands, we're confident that the film will be everything that Jobs himself was: captivating, entertaining, and polarising."
Sorkin's new project isn't the only film about Jobs in the works - Ashton Kutcher is to star as the technology mogul in an independent movie called Jobs.

Ryan Seacrest Buys DeGeneres Compound For Over $40 Million
American Idol host Ryan Seacrest has bought the home previously owned by the show's former judge Ellen DeGeneres for over $40 million (£25 million).
DeGeneres placed the sprawling Beverly Hills compound on the market for $49 million (£30 million), and Seacrest has paid close to the asking price, according to The Hollywood Reporter, although another source close to the transaction tells the publication that the sale is for far less than initially reported.
The nine-bedroom property includes a main residence, two guesthouses and a separate three-bedroom house.
The grounds include a swimming pool and large pond.
The main house was previously owned by Will & Grace co-creator Max Mutchnick, who sold it to DeGeneres in 2007. »

Joan Collins Blasts U.K. Officials Over Airport Chaos
Dynasty legend Joan Collins has urged British officials to employ more border staff after she was one of thousands of passengers held up in airport chaos on Tuesday.
The actress was appalled to find lengthy queues of travellers waiting at passport control after she arrived at London's Heathrow Airport, and took to her Twitter.com page to voice her frustration.
She tweeted, "Arrived (at) Lhr after great trip on British Airways but 1000s waiting at passport control."
Collins then implored Home Secretary Theresa May to hire more immigration officials, adding, "Listen up Ms May - need more officers."
Keith Vaz, chairman of the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee, who was also at the airport, explains, "I felt pretty ashamed as a British MP. It was absolutely packed. There were people with babies running to beat the queues."
British politicians are facing increased pressure to minimise travel delays this summer before an influx of tourists arrives in the capital for the Olympic Games. »
Brigitte Bardot Offers To Swap Places With Imprisoned Animal Rights Activist
French film icon-turned-animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot has offered to switch places with a marine conservation group leader, who has been arrested and imprisoned in Germany.
Canadian Paul Watson, the founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and a former Greenpeace campaigner, is accused of endangering the crew onboard a shark-finning ship after confronting them in the waters of Costa Rica in 2002.
He was arrested on an international warrant in Frankfurt, Germany on Sunday, and on Monday, German officials remanded him in custody.
Bardot, 77, is appalled by the news and insists she is willing to trade places with Watson, who has been battling hunters on the high seas for years.
A statement issued by the actress reads: "Being outraged by the fact that he's been put in prison, I offer to take his place because I am his accomplice.
"I have always supported Paul Watson, my brother in arms." »
Angelina Jolie Gushes About Ex-husband Billy Bob Thornton In New Book
Newly-engaged Angelina Jolie has poured her heart out about ex-husband Billy Bob Thornton in the foreword of his memoirs.
The actress split from the Oscar winner a decade ago, but it is clear she still has feelings for her former partner as she plans to wed Brad Pitt.
Cooing about the actor in the foreword of his new book The Billy Bob Tapes: A Cave Full of Ghosts, which Life & Style magazine has obtained, Jolie writes, "He (Thornton) has an unmatchable wit and can make you laugh until your face hurts," adding the star "has a big beautiful heart."
Jolie will never forget how clever her eccentric ex-husband is: "To be with him is like being with a mad mathematician. He is constantly counting and repeating."
The actress concludes with a touching tribute to Thornton, adding, "Some people walk through life able to quiet the voices in their heads. He can't. And I, and everyone else who knows him well, we love him for it. I know one thing: The world would certainly be a hell of a lot more dull if that man weren't in it." »
Elizabeth Banks Felt Like A Liar Denying Pregnancy Rumours
Actress Elizabeth Banks felt guilty telling Alec Baldwin she wasn't pregnant while a surrogate was secretly carrying her baby - because technically she was in the process of becoming a mother.
The Hunger Games star and her husband Max Handelman welcomed little Felix last March after having problems conceiving on their own, but she largely kept the news under wraps.
Banks had trouble keeping the secret to herself around her 30 Rock co-star Baldwin because although she wasn't physically with child, she was preparing for her new arrival.
She tells Allure magazine, "Alec Baldwin asked me straight up - I had made a comment about wearing a fake belly (while filming What to Expect When You're Expecting), something innocuous and he looked me straight in the eye and asked me, 'Are you pregnant right now?' And I blanched totally. Because of course, technically, no I wasn't. But then, technically, yes, in a way I was!
"And it was very weird. I thought Alec was reading my mind or something. Well, we weren't telling anyone then, so I said no. I thought, is that a lie? Because it wasn't a lie, and yet it was a lie! It's essentially a test tube baby - its just the test tube is another woman. That you can grow a baby outside of yourself! Its amazing!" »

The Gcb star was hurt in a car accident and went under the knife on Monday for corrective surgery.

Controversial TV series Gcb was axed by ABC executives earlier this week (begs14May12) due to low ratings. »
PETA Releases Shocking Horse Cruelty Advert
PETA activists are stepping up their campaign against animal cruelty in Hollywood with a graphic advertisement depicting a dead horse, following fresh allegations of abuse on the set of Dustin Hoffman's axed show Luck.
The hard-hitting ad, put together by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), was printed in the Los Angeles Times and features the tagline Shot On Location under an image of a lifeless horse.
It states, "Animals don't choose to appear in film, TV, or advertising, yet thousands are forced to perform every year. Of all animal 'actors,' horses are the most frequently killed or injured on set... Not everybody wants to be famous."
PETA Vice President Kathy Guillermo says, "PETA's ad is a reminder to Hollywood that current guidelines simply don't safeguard animals in entertainment. It's up to producers and directors to protect horses - ideally, by leaving them off of the set in the first place."
The notice comes less than two weeks after PETA filed a complaint with the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office and the California Veterinary Medical Board alleging that horses used on racing drama Luck were underfed to save money and some were tranquillised to keep them docile for filming.
The HBO series was cancelled in March after a horse was humanely put down following an accident at the studio's stables.
It was the third equine death since filming began at California's Santa Anita racetrack. »
Jenny McCarthy: 'I'm Dating Bald Guy Urlacher'
Model-turned-actress Jenny McCarthy has coyly confirmed reports she has found love with American football superstar Brian Urlacher - but he was not the guy she romanced on the set of her new reality show Love In The Wild.
McCarthy recently confessed she'd fallen hard for a co-worker in Costa Rica, where her new show was filmed, and has since been spotted out and about with the Chicago Bears hunk - leading gossips to link Urlacher to the show.
The Scream 3 star has now cleared up the dating rumours while promoting her new series, which will hit TV screens in America this summer.
She tells Access Hollywood, "I made out in the wild, but I didn't find love there. But now I'm doing Ok."
And recalling a matchmaking session she had on the show's sister programme Access Hollywood Live, McCarthy chuckled, "We talked about me looking for a bald guy... Things worked out!"
The former Playboy Playmate of the Year was spotted dining out with the Chicago Bears linebacker in Beverly Hills last month, and romance rumours spread as the two attempted to avoid the paparazzi by sneaking out a back door at steak house Mastro's. »
Jessica Alba Tapes Heels To Her Feet
Jessica Alba relies on an unconventional shoe trick to avoid embarrassing herself when she wears high heels - she tapes them to her feet.
The Fantastic Four beauty admits she has tripped up too many times while walking in her fashionable footwear, so she has taken to using double-sided tape to keep her skyscraper stilettos in place.
She tells New York Magazine, "I stick every shoe to the bottom of my foot with double-stick tape.
"Shoes have fallen off, I've fallen to the ground. It's all happened." »
Maggie Gyllenhaal Adopts English Accent From Emma Thompson
Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal has confessed the English accent she turns on for film roles is a perfect imitation of her Nanny McPhee co-star Emma Thompson.
The Secretary star has often had to grasp a foreign accent and admits working with the Oscar winner has helped her nail a posh English tone.
She tells BlogTalkRadio, "Everyone tells me I sound like Emma Thompson and that's probably how I learned it... I was just watching Nanny McPhee with my daughter; I had never shown it to her before... and I kept thinking, 'Oh, is my accent Ok?' I also did three plays with an English accent - Homebody/Kabul, Tony Kushner's play and Closer a couple of times which is how I first learned it. It comes kind of easily to me.
"I (can) just talk like that all the time. Even in the car going to work I say, 'I know this is silly and forgive me, but I'm just going to talk like this (adopts accent) and people get used to it. Then I come home and I have to go, 'Ok, stop, stop; just talk American!'"
Now Gyllenhaal, who perfects her English in her new period film Hysteria, is considering adopting a South African accent for a new project: "I'm thinking about doing this play where I'll have to have a South African accent and that seems so incredibly daunting. I think the good thing is a lot of people here (in America) don't really know what a South African accent sounds like!" »
Malin Akerman Has To Watch What She Eats Due To Autoimmune Condition
Actress Malin Akerman has to be careful what she eats after learning she suffers from an autoimmune condition that makes it impossible for her body to digest gluten properly.
The health-conscious actress reveals the problem was diagnosed two years ago after she fell ill and now she has to be extra careful when dining out on bread and pasta in particular.
She says, "About two years ago I learned I had an autoimmune condition that doesn't allow me to eat gluten, so if I have any bread or pasta, it's going to be gluten-free."
But she's still a sucker for fries - and likes to splurge on a good steak once a week.
The actress, who bared all in Watchmen, has one of the best bodies in Hollywood and admits that, although she likes to eat healthy, nutritional snacks, she can't resist a blow-out meal.
She tells fitness magazine Shape, "I believe in eating as nutritiously as I can all the time... My mother raised me on fresh - rather than processed - foods, and that's how I eat on a regular basis.
"(But) I can't live without chocolate... I also love a thick steak and French fries. I try not to eat them more than once a week, but if they somehow landed on the table in front of me, I won't hold back."
She adds, "You've got to allow yourself the things you enjoy or you'll just be miserable." »
Jessica Pare Thought Mad Men Role Was Short-term
Mad Men star Jessica Pare had no idea how big a part she had landed when she was first cast as Jon Hamm's receptionist on the hit TV show and was convinced her character would be fired from episode to episode.
The actress was brought in as advertising executive Don Draper's office assistant Megan in the fourth season of the period drama, and the two characters embarked on a love affair which resulted in marriage, bringing Pare back for the current season five.
But Pare insists she wasn't worried about being written out of the programme - she was content just watching Hamm and his leading co-stars from the sidelines.
She tells New York Magazine, "Every time I did an episode, I didn't know if I would be back. I was just happy to sit in the background if they did a scene in the reception area."
And when production on Mad Men was shut down last year due to a contract dispute between the show's creator Matthew Weiner and bosses at TV network AMC, Pare was sure Megan would be killed off at the start of the new season.
She adds, "I kept saying, 'Two words: closed casket'. It (season premiere) opens on a closed casket. Pan up to Don, bereaved, winks at a blonde down the aisle. Bye-bye, Megan."
Instead, Pare stole the show when the programme returned to U.S. screens earlier this year by performing a sexy rendition of Gillian Hills' 1960s French tune Zou Bisou Bisou in character at a birthday party for Draper. »
Battleship Director Challenges Reporter Over Military Service
An Israeli TV reporter was caught out by Battleship director Peter Berg when their promotional chat about the action film turned serious and the moviemaker quizzed him about his military service.
After chatting about the political situation between Israel and Iran, Berg asked reporter Jason Holt if he had served in the Israeli army - a requirement for citizens.
When the 25 year old revealed he hadn't, shocked Berg, a fellow Jew, said, "What? How did you get out of that? Are you a draft dodger?" before adding, "You better join the army motherf**ker!"
Berg then asked Holt if and when he planned to serve, prompting the reporter to reply, "We're not having this conversation."
The awkward encounter came at the end of the TV chat, which has appeared online, and concluded with the two men laughing and shaking hands. »
Tom Cruise Still Mesmerised By Wife Katie Holmes
Tom Cruise has dispelled persistent rumours his marriage to Katie Holmes is crumbling behind closed doors, insisting he's incredibly happy with their "very special" relationship.
The Mission: Impossible star began dating Holmes in 2005 and he famously jumped up and down on Oprah Winfrey's TV couch as he professed his undying love for his new girlfriend, just weeks into their whirlwind romance. They welcomed daughter Suri in April 2006 and wed later that year.
Recent tabloid reports suggest the couple is on the verge of a split - but the actor has brushed off the speculation by gushing about his wife and admitting he's still mesmerised by everything she does.
Cruise reveals he felt an instant attraction to the former Dawson's Creek star the moment he met her - and just laying eyes on her brings a smile to his face every day.
He tells Playboy magazine, "She is an extraordinary person, and if you spent five minutes with her, you'd see it. Everything she does, she does with this beautiful creativity. She's funny and charming, and when she walks into the room, I just feel better."
And the Hollywood actor reveals he keeps their chemistry alive by organising intimate meals to give the pair time to bond.
He adds, "I'm a romantic. I like doing things like creating romantic dinners, and she enjoys that. I don't know what to say - I'm just happy, and I have been since the moment I met her. What we have is very special." »
Novelist Carlos Fuentes Dead At 83
Beloved Mexican author Carlos Fuentes has died, aged 83.
The novelist and essayist, who is among the most popular writers of the Spanish-speaking world, passed away on Tuesday, according to multiple reports.
Mexican President Felipe Calderon announced the death on his Twitter.com page.
Fuentes' most famous novels included Where the Air Is Clear, The Death of Artemio Cruz, Terra Nostra and The Old Gringo, which was adapted into a movie starring Jane Fonda and Gregory Peck.

Michael Fassbender Was Very Upset By Shame Oscar Snub
Actor Michael Fassbender is convinced he was robbed of an Oscar nomination for his turn in Shame at this year's Academy Awards because voters couldn't stomach his sex addict character.
The Inglourious Basterds star was widely expected to receive a Best Actor nod for his portrayal of Brandon Sullivan, but he was edged out by Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Gary Oldman, Demian Bichir and eventual winner Jean Dujardin.
And Fassbender sheepishly confesses he was blindsided by the snub.
He tells GQ magazine, "At the beginning people (say), 'You're going to be going to the Oscars,' and you're like, 'Whatever, doesn't matter, don't think so.' But after a while it does penetrate. After a while you're like, 'Anyway, so I'm going to the Oscars...' And you start to believe it. And I did. I thought I was going. And then I found out I wasn't and I was upset. I was very upset by it. The first reaction was, 'What the f**k?' It's a vanity thing. It does become important to you. And it shouldn't."
And the British actor is certain his sexually-explicit love scenes and full-frontal nude shots are too blame - because prudish Academy voters still aren't ready for such a controversial film.
He's also convinced a scene in which his character urinates was the difference between him attending the Academy Awards and being frozen out: "That peeing cost me an Oscar.
"After a certain point you worry that it kind of detracts from the movie. But there's nothing I can do. I just have to laugh it off. I can. Pretty much." »
Tobey Maguire & Leonardo DiCaprio Spared Court Battle Over Poker Cash
Famous best buddies Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have been saved from a revealing court showdown over their poker winnings.
The quartet are among the high-powered card sharks caught up in a legal battle between their former poker playing pal Bradley Ruderman and the people the jailed hedge fund manager conned out of millions.
As court proceedings loomed, it looked as if the details of the illegal high-stakes Hollywood poker games would be revealed, but the 22 people who sued to recoup Ruderman's gambling cash have all settled their cases for a total of more than $1.75 million (£1 million), according to Celebuzz.com.
Howard Ehrenberg, the bankruptcy trustee who sued Maguire and others in a bid to recoup as much as $5.2 million (£3.25 million) they won from Ruderman at the underground poker games, tells the website, "All of the poker defendant cases are settled.
"The settlement of every poker related case without having had to incur the cost of taking any of them to trial means that the fund available for the victims has been maximised."
Ruderman was sentenced to 10 years in jail in 2010 for bilking investors out of millions. His victims claimed he used their cash to live the high life in Malibu, California and pay his way in to high-stakes Beverly Hills Texas Hold 'Em poker games between 2006 and 2009.
Ruderman wrote cheques and wire transfers to Maguire, totalling $311,200 (£194,500) to cover poker losses, according to one of the lawsuits filed and later settled. The actor was one of the first to settle, agreeing to hand over $80,000 (£50,000). »
John Travolta's Lawyer: 'My Client Has Been Vindicated'
John Travolta's lawyer insists his client has been "vindicated" after an unnamed male masseur moved to dismiss his sexual battery lawsuit against the star on Tuesday.
The plaintiff, identified only as John Doe, sued Travolta earlier this month, claiming the Grease star touched his genitals and sexually propositioned him during a massage at the Beverly Hills Hotel on 16 January.
Travolta's attorney Marty Singer immediately dismissed the allegations, insisting that his client wasn't even in California on the day the plaintiff claims to have met the actor.
And now it appears the accuser has changed his mind.
In a statement, Singer writes, "My client is completely vindicated by Doe #1 dropping his claims and dismissing his lawsuit."
And the lawyer fully expects another unnamed masseur who also filed a suit against Travolta to move to dismiss his case too: "We fully expect that my client will similarly be vindicated with respect to Doe #2, as well as with respect to any other person who makes meritless claims against John Travolta." »
