Jean DujardinCoin Was The Artist's Lucky Charm At The Oscars

The star of The Artist has a lucky coin to thank for his Best Actor Oscar win, according to producer Thomas Langmann.

The young movie mogul, who is late filmmaker Claude Berri's son, was given the coin as a charm from his daughter - and when it proved lucky at the Cesar Awards in France on Friday night, he chose to share the good fortune with Jean Dujardin at the Academy Awards on Sunday.

And it worked for the French star, who beat out George Clooney for the honour.

He says, "My daughter gave me a coin and that I had in my pocket. I didn't think we would win the Cesar, and we won. So, a few awards before Jean Dujardin, I told him, put this in your pocket. Then he won.

"I went back to see him, and I said, 'Give me back my daughter's coin,' and it was in my pocket (when we won for Best Film)." »

King Sentenced To 20 Days House Arrest

Human rights activist Rodney King has been sentenced to 20 days of home confinement following a DUI arrest last year.

King was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence in Riverside County, California on 12 July after he was found to have high levels of alcohol and marijuana in his system.

But the Celebrity Rehab star escaped jail time by striking an agreement with prosecutors and instead pleaded guilty to one count of reckless driving, according to TMZ.com.

A judge sentenced King to three years summary probation and 20 days of house arrest. He was also ordered to enrol in a nine-month alcohol education programme and pay a $500 (GBP312.50) fine as well as court costs.

This marks King's latest run-in with the cops - his brutal televised beating by Los Angeles police officers in 1991 sparked the L.A. Riots and he was convicted of a DUI in 2004. »

Sheridan's Desperate Housewives Trial Underway

Jury selection for actress Nicollette Sheridan's wrongful termination trial against Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry has begun in a Los Angeles court.

Sheridan filed a $20 million (£12.5 million) lawsuit against Cherry in 2010, alleging he slapped her in the face after she expressed an opinion about a script he had written, and then killed off her character when she complained to producers.

The star, who played sexy real estate dealer Edit Britt in the series, also sued over claims of sexual and gender harassment and assault, although those accusations were later dropped.

She is now seeking compensation for wrongful termination and battery and is entitled to receive only one year's salary in damages, amounting up to around $4 million (£2.5 million), according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sheridan's legal representatives are planning to call a number of top TV executives to testify in the case, including one of the show's former producers, Lori Kirkland Baker, who has previously supported the actress' version of events.

Meanwhile, Sheridan will come face-to-face with her former Desperate Housewives co-stars Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman and Eva Longoria when they are called as witnesses for the defence.

The trial is expected to last just under two weeks. »

Portman And Millepied Married?

Actress Natalie Portman has sparked rumours she has secretly wed ballet choreographer Benjamin Millepied after they were both spotted wearing bands on their ring fingers at Sunday's Academy Awards.

The Black Swan beauty was newly-engaged and pregnant when she celebrated her Best Actress Oscar win at last year's ceremony, and now, a year on, it appears the famously-private couple is man and wife.

Portman wore a new piece of jewellery beneath her diamond engagement ring as she presented the Best Actor prize to The Artist's Jean Dujardin, while Frenchman Millepied displayed a simple silver band on his left hand as they attended the official Oscars afterparty.

A representative for Portman had yet to respond to requests for a comment as WENN went to press.

The actress gave birth to the couple's son, Alef, in June. »

Pulp Fiction star Uma Thurman is pregnant with businessman boyfriend Arpad Busson's baby.

The child will be the 41-year-old actress' third and her first with Busson. She has two kids from her marriage to Ethan Hawke.

A source tells Life & Style magazine that Thurman is due in late summer.

A representative for the actress tells WENN, "This story is confirmed." »

Dujardin's Mum Not Happy About Oscars Foul Language

Jean Dujardin's mother did not approve of her son's foul language at the Oscars - she admonished The Artist star at the post-show Governors Ball.

The actor apologised backstage for swearing in French as he picked up his Best Actor Oscar on Sunday night, but his mum was still not satisfied.

Outside the bash, when asked to comment on her son's choice of words, she told reporters, "I don't like, I don't like." »

Mandela Released From Hospital

Civil rights icon Nelson Mandela has been released from hospital after undergoing a stomach operation at the weekend (25-26Feb12).

The former South African president checked into a medical centre on Saturday for an investigative laparoscopy camera probe following complaints of persistent abdominal pain.

And on Sunday the 93-year-old anti-apartheid leader was discharged and is now resting comfortably at his home in Johannesburg.

Affectionately referring to the the icon by his nickname Madiba, current President Jacob Zuma tells CNN, "The doctors have assured us that there is nothing to worry about and that Madiba is in good health."

Mandela, who made his last public appearance at his country's World Cup in July, 2010, has been plagued by recent health problems - he was hospitalised last year for an acute respiratory infection. »

Kennedy's Nephew Arrested Over Alleged Hospital Altercation

John F. Kennedy's nephew has been charged with harassment and endangering the welfare of a child following an alleged altercation with hospital nurses last month.

Douglas Kennedy was accused of twisting Anna Lane's wrist and kicking Cari Luciano to the ground as he tried to take his newborn baby out of the maternity ward of a Westchester, New York hospital on 7 January.

The broadcast journalist was arrested and arraigned on Thursday, but he has denied any wrongdoing.

He tells the New York Post, "She tried to grab the baby from my arms. I was shocked and was simply trying to protect my son."

And the 44 year old's attorney, Robert Gottlieb, vows to fight the claims, adding, "We are confident that the Westchester district attorney, once she is able to evaluate all the evidence, will dismiss the charges. The reason it's clear that this is a money grab is that within days they (plaintiffs) had hired a personal-injury lawyer." »

She died in her native Pennsylvania on Friday after suffering a stroke.

The novelist is perhaps best known for teaming up with her husband Stan to create the beloved kids book franchise the Berenstain Bears in 1962.

Rash Denies Mocking Jolie's Leggy Oscars Pose

Comedian Jim Rash insists he mimicked Angelina Jolie's striking, leggy Academy Awards pose as he collected the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay as a "loving tribute" to the Hollywood beauty.

The Community star and co-writers Alexander Payne and Nat Faxon picked up the award for their work on The Descendants at Sunday's big event, and Rash raised a laugh onstage by copying the strong pose Jolie had adopted while reading out the nominees minutes earlier.

Flaunting her long right leg through the slit of her black velvet Atelier Versace dress, Jolie wowed the audience and TV viewers, but it was Rash's funny stance that became a talking point of the evening.

However, he insists he only meant to pay tribute to the Salt stunner.

He says, "I had just seen her pose and thought it was bold and fun. And you know what? We have exactly the same legs. (It was) a loving tribute and nothing but."

Rash tells the Washington Post, “It was just an impulse. I was just standing there and I thought (I'll stick my leg out). I hope it was Ok. I hope she thought it was Ok. It was a loving tribute." »

Young Wants Apology From Academy Bosses After Post-oscars Arrest

Actress Sean Young is demanding an apology from Academy Awards bosses following her arrest at the official Oscars after party, where she was accused of hitting a security guard.

The Blade Runner star became embroiled in a dispute with a bodyguard at the star-studded Governors Ball in Los Angeles on Sunday and was placed under citizen's arrest as police were called to the scene.

She was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of misdemeanour battery, and was later released.

But Young insists she was not causing any trouble as she snapped pictures of the celebrity arrivals outside the post-Oscars bash, and she claims to have been left with bruises on her arms, where she was reportedly grabbed by the bodyguard.

She tells X17online.com, "What happened was I was standing behind the rope and I was saying hello to people and I was taking pictures with them. Then a security guard asked me to leave and I said, 'Why do I have to leave?' and he said, 'Just come this way ma'am.' Then he grabbed my arms, and we actually took pictures at the police station last night (of her injuries)... He started pulling me... and I basically moved my arm (back) and it just kinda got him right straight in the face and that's when they went postal on me (got mad at me)."

Young is adamant the incident will be resolved amicably once Academy Awards executives realise what happened to her, but if not, she's ready to pursue legal action - because she's confident CCTV video tapes will prove she did no wrong.

She says, "The Academy is more likely gonna issue a public apology apologising for the bad judgment of the security guard... It was unfortunate the Academy has devolved in this way... I was well behaved, it was fine. And the surveillance tape will bear that out actually... and if I don't get a public apology I will make a lawsuit. It's atrocious behaviour." »

The Artist Was Originally Shot In Colour

Oscar-winning silent movie The Artist was originally shot in colour in case film bosses didn't want to show the picture in black and white.

The film was the big winner at Sunday night's Academy Awards, taking five prizes including the coveted Best Picture title as well as Best Actor for its star Jean Dujardin and Best Director for Michel Hazanavicius.

The Best Picture win made The Artist only the second silent film ever to scoop the Academy's top prize after Wings in 1929.

However, Mark Bridges, who won the Best Costume Design Oscar for his work on the movie, has revealed the picture was originally shot in colour before being converted to black and white.

Backstage at the Academy Awards, he told reporters, "It was filmed in colour. It was filmed in colour because there was a chance in some markets it would be shown in colour."

Producer Thomas Langmann was later asked whether he has any plans to release colour footage, but he said, "No. Sorry, but no." »

Phantom Of The Opera Show Cancelled

A performance of The Phantom Of The Opera has been cancelled ahead of the start of the musical's U.K. tour due to logistical problems.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's longrunning musical is set for a regional theatre tour in Britain but the first show in Plymouth, England on Monday has been scrapped to allow the cast more time to rehearse with a new stage set.

A spokesperson for theatre mogul Cameron Mackintosh has revealed Monday's preview performance at the city's Theatre Royal was axed because "the size and complexity of the production" means the cast will need more rehearsal time, adding, "Several large scenic elements can only be incorporated into the show for the first time on Monday morning."

The musical will officially open at the Theatre Royal in March. »

Collins Injured On Movie Set

Actress Lily Collins was left battered and bruised on the set of new movie Mirror Mirror after taking several blows from a sword while shooting fight scenes with Armie Hammer.

Collins, daughter of veteran rocker Phil Collins, plays Snow White in the adventure film and the script required her to clash onscreen with co-stars Hammer and Julia Roberts.

She was so determined to make their swordfighting scenes look realistic, she took fencing lessons for four months - but she was still unable to effectively parry Hammer's blows when the cameras rolled.

Collins tells Stella magazine, "For one scene Armie and I were fighting... There were 150 sword moves and Armie smacked me several times. No blood was drawn, but I was so bruised. It doesn't matter how much padding you wear, those swords are lethal."

The actress also recalls an eye-watering incident when Roberts pulled out a chunk of her hair, adding, "In one scene my dress got caught in my shoe and she pulled some of my hair out. That's the take they used. It really hurt. Afterwards they yelled 'cut' and she said, 'I'm so sorry'. And I said, 'It's totally fine'. Because it's Julia." »

Actor Howson Sectioned

British actor James Howson is set to spend a month in hospital after he was sectioned under the U.K.'s Mental Health Act.

The 24-year-old rising star, who played Heathcliff in a 2011 movie adaptation of Wuthering Heights, has pleaded guilty to racially aggravated harassment stemming from a bust-up with his ex-girlfriend, and was due to be sentenced on Monday.

However, the hearing at Leeds Magistrates' Court in England was adjourned after it emerged Howson is receiving care at a hospital in Newcastle, England and is being held under the Mental Health Act.

His lawyer, Anthony Sugare, says, "The position is that on arriving at court this morning, I was told that the court itself had heard from the hospital that he had been taken in there under the Mental Health Act for a period of 28 days for observation."

Howson is now expected to be sentenced on 26 March. »

Sarkozy Congratulates The Artist Stars

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has sent his congratulations to the cast and crew of The Artist following the film's big wins at the Oscars on Sunday night.

The silent movie landed five prizes at the Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor for Jean Dujardin, who became the first French star to win the coveted prize.

The country's leader has now reached out to The Artist crew to thank them for bringing French cinema to the forefront in Hollywood.

Sarkozy insists the Oscars triumph is "a tremendous success for French cinema" and singled out Dujardin for praise, calling his performance "dazzling".

He adds, "(This) demonstrates the exceptional vitality of our cinema and the success of our policy of supporting the excellence of this great French industry." »

Moore Praises 'Ambitious' Palin

Julianne Moore has heaped praise on former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, hailing the highly-criticised politician's "extremely hardworking and ambitious" attitude.

The Oscar-winner portrays the one-time vice presidential candidate in upcoming film Game Change, based on John Heilemann and Mark Halperin's book which chronicles John McCain's failed bid for the White House in 2008.

Moore spent months researching Palin in order to play her onscreen, and even though the politician came under fire for appearing to be ill-prepared to run for office, the actress is adamant her intelligence and leadership skills are undervalued.

She says, "I do think the situation that she was put in was a completely untenable one.

"People did see that she was not as prepared as they would have liked her to be. And they saw it in the various interviews that we all saw. I think she’s very canny (clever)... And she’s extremely hardworking and ambitious, and would not have reached the place that she reached without ability. You don’t get to be a vice-presidential candidate by accident." »

George Jung, whose life story was brought to the big screen in the 2001 Hollywood movie, is currently serving 15 years behind bars on drug smuggling charges at a prison in Texas.

It has now been revealed Jung was allowed out of jail in December and transported to a local medical facility so doctors could remove a potentially cancerous mole from his nose, according to TMZ.com.

Nye Embroiled In Legal Battle With Ex-girlfriend

American kids' TV legend Bill Nye is embroiled in a court battle with an ex-girlfriend over attorney fees stemming from a bitter six-year legal battle between the pair.

The Bill Nye The Science Guy host was granted a restraining order against Blair Tindall in 2006 after alleging she stole his laptop from him and sent out nasty emails in his name.

They were back in court in 2009 when Nye claimed she violated the order, and she was told to help him pay the $57,000 (£35,625) legal bill he had racked up.

Nye has now filed new documents alleging Tindall has yet to pay back any of the money and he wants a court to enforce the previous ruling, according to TMZ.com.

Tindall tells the website, "Bill Nye was the love of my life. I'm surprised he has taken this action against me. I have no funds to pay him, and he is a very wealthy man, so I'm not sure where this is coming from." »

Lawless Charged With Burglary After Protest Arrest

Actress Lucy Lawless has been charged with burglary and released from police custody after she was arrested for staging a protest onboard an oil ship docked in her native New Zealand.

The former Xena: Warrior Princess star was among a group of Greenpeace campaigners who climbed aboard the vessel in Taranaki, New Zealand, on Friday and chained themselves to the ship's tower to protest against oil drilling in the Arctic.

They spent four days onboard before they were removed by police on Monday and subsequently arrested.

Lawless and her fellow protesters were charged with burglary and bailed to appear at New Plymouth District Court on Thursday.

In her final posts on Twitter.com prior to her arrest, the actress wrote, "We stand in solidarity with all who love the earth - let's Save the Arctic from Shell!... Seven of us came up the tower on Shell's drillship but 4 days later 130,000 will come down. In solidarity we can Save The Arctic." »

Actress Sean Young was arrested at the official Academy Awards afterparty on Sunday night after allegedly becoming embroiled in a dispute with a security guard.

The Blade Runner star was placed under citizen's arrest by a bodyguard at the star-studded post-Oscars Governor's Ball in Los Angeles and later detained by police officers who were called to the scene.

Young was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of misdemeanour battery, according to TMZ.com. »

Oprah: 'Oscars Debut Was A Horrible Night'

Oprah Winfrey's 2012 Oscars experience was a lot more pleasant than her first appearance at the Academy Awards in 1986 when she was nominated for The Color Purple - as she was wearing a dress that didn't fit her.

The TV mogul, who was honoured with a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award on Sunday, admits her Oscars debut was "one of the most horrible nights of my life".

Appearing on comedian Jimmy Kimmel's post-awards chat show, she explained, "I had used Dolly Parton's dressmaker... He'd come over to do some fitting early in the day and then said, 'I need to take it back'. When he brought it back, I didn't try it on and so when I went to put it on half an hour before going to the Oscars it didn't fit; I couldn't get it up over my hips.

"My hairdresser... had to lay me on the floor and push my butt down... I rode to the Oscars... planked in the back of a limousine. When I got out everybody had gone in; there was no more red carpet... I couldn't sit in the chair."

Winfrey confessed she was praying for someone else to win the Best Supporting Actress award because "I knew I couldn't get out of the chair."

Her prayers were answered - Anjelica Huston won the Oscar for Prizzi's Honor. »

The untitled thriller, which also features Jessica Chastain and Mark Strong, will start shooting in India next month. »

Oprah Gets Violent In Kimmel's Post-oscars Skit

Oprah Winfrey showed off her violent side on late-night TV in America on Sunday when she attacked book club fans as part of a skit on comedian Jimmy Kimmel's annual post-Oscars show.

The comic was pitching ideas to the TV mogul for new Oprah Winfrey Network shows and he imagined one that was a spin-off of Oprah's famous Book Club segment, called Fight Club Book Club.

In the scene, the former talk show queen challenged fans who didn't agree with her take on literary classic To Kill a Mockingbird.

Winfrey smashed glass vases, headbutted, kicked and punched other club members.

The skit ended when a disgusted Winfrey insisted Kimmel leave her office and jettisoned him through the roof in an ejector seat. »

Stone Making Plans For Undercover Comic-con Visit

The Help star Emma Stone is planning to hit the world's biggest comic book convention in disguise this summer after missing out on the chance to join other geeks at Comic-Con last year.

The actress had planned to attend Comic-Con in San Diego, California dressed as a Star Wars Stormtrooper after promoting her upcoming Spider-Man film, but there wasn't time.

So she has made a note to return as a costumed fan this year.

Stone tells the Comic-Con Annual, "We had to leave right after the panel to fly back to L.A... (Obviously) now I can't be a Stormtrooper, but I'll pick something else."

She also insists she's not joking about her love for the event: "It's like 100 per cent passion in one venue. It's fantastic... There's just such a positive feeling there."

Comic-Con 2012 will take place at the San Diego Convention Center in July. »

All-star Line-up For Comedian Kimmel's Movie Trailer

Josh Brolin and Edward Norton shared a smooch and Kate Beckinsale made out with Star Wars wookie Chewbacca in comedian Jimmy Kimmel's 2012 post-Oscars late-night skit.

The funnyman traditionally hosts a chat show immediately after the Academy Awards, which are held across Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles just yards from his studio, and it features a star-studded spectacular.

This year, Kimmel wowed TV viewers with his Movie: The Movie trailer, which featured Brolin as President George W. Bush - who he portrayed in the film W - and Norton as his gay spy lover and British beauty Beckinsale, who appeared naked in bed after a sex session with Chewbacca.

The hilarious sketch also featured cameos from Ryan Phillippe, Jessica Alba, Taylor Lautner, Antonio Banderas, Colin Farrell, Charlize Theron, Cameron Diaz, Samuel L. Jackson, Jessica Biel, Meryl Streep and Dame Helen Mirren.

Meanwhile, the butt of Kimmel's late-night jokes, Matt Damon, appeared as a purple grape and was told he would be cut out of the finished film, prompting him to rage, "Are you f**king kidding me? I will f**king kill you, Kimmel", before flashing his purple genitalia.

His Ocean's Eleven co-star George Clooney also appeared as a disabled Nasa scientist, while Tom Hanks played a robot lawyer and Precious actress Gabourey Sidibe showed up as Black Hitler, riding an asteroid on a crash course towards earth. »

Welch Broke Her Foot On Christmas Day

Ageing beauty Raquel Welch spent the early part of 2012 hobbling around film sets after refusing to rest her broken left foot.

The One Million Years B.C. star tells WENN she fell down a flight of stairs on Christmas Day, but refused to let the accident stall her work commitments.

She explains, "I get injured doing everything. Christmas Day I came home from dinner and I fell down the stairs and broke my left foot. It was horrible because all I could think of, being an actress, while I was falling was, 'My God, I've got a shoot next week and I won't be able to wear those high heels.'

"They (doctors) wanted to put me in a wheelchair and I said, 'No you won't. I'll figure it out!'" »

Hefner Faces Runaway Bride Harris

Hugh Hefner came face-to-face with his runaway bride on Saturday night after his former fiancee Crystal Harris attended a party at the Playboy mansion.

The 25-year-old model broke the Playboy boss' heart last year when she called off their wedding just days before the scheduled nuptials in June.

She dealt the ageing Lothario another blow when she put the 3.39 carat diamond engagement ring Hefner proposed with under the hammer at an auction in New York.

However, the pair put the past behind them when the 85 year old invited one of her pals to a gathering at his lavish home and Harris tagged along.

According to TMZ.com, the former couple enjoyed a brief chat, before going their separate ways for the rest of the evening. »

The former Xena: Warrior Princess star was among a group of seven campaigners who climbed aboard the vessel, which is docked in Taranaki, New Zealand, on Friday to protest against oil drilling in the Arctic.

She vowed not to leave her spot on the ship's drilling tower until the mission was called off, and insisted she expected to be taken into custody for her demonstration.

She told TMZ.com, "We know we're going to be arrested ... but ... this is a moral decision for us."

Police removed the group from the ship on Monday and Lawless was taken to a police station to be processed along with her fellow activists, according to Australia's ABC News. »

Grazer Insisted On Pre-oscars Meeting With Cohen

Oscars producer Brian Grazer insisted on a meeting with funnyman Sacha Baron Cohen minutes before the start of the big show on Sunday night to make sure The Dictator wouldn't be making a surprise appearance during the ceremony.

Cohen dumped an urn of fake ashes on the red carpet and all over E! news presenter Ryan Seacrest after arriving in character as Admiral Aladeen and his presence made Grazer more than a little nervous.

The movie mogul says, "Those shenanigans caused me to go into his dressing room because he had to change. He made me worry that he could create a problem during the show, but he promised me that he wouldn't... and he's a man of his word." »

Dujardin Apologises For Swearing In Oscars Speech

Jean Dujardin has apologised for swearing in French as he picked up his Best Actor Oscar on Sunday night.

The French star took gold at the glitzy ceremony in Los Angeles for his role in silent movie The Artist, seeing off competition from George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Gary Oldman and Demian Bichir.

Dujardin was ecstatic as he made his acceptance speech and he invoked his The Artist character George Valentin to yell exclamations in French, including a curse word which is the equivalent of dropping the 'f-bomb'.

He was asked about his swearing during a backstage press conference and Dujardin smiled as he admitted uttering the naughty word in front of millions of TV viewers and apologised for his behaviour, telling reporters, "Yeah. I'm sorry." »

The Artist Triumphs At The Oscars

The Artist became the first silent movie to win a Best Film Oscar at the Academy Awards in 84 years on Sunday.

The black and white film completed a weekend trio of triumphs after also winning gold at the Cesar Awards in Paris on Friday and the Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica, California on Saturday.

The Artist filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius was also triple weekend winner after claiming the Best Director honour at the Hollywood & Highland Center on Sunday, and the film also took home trophies for Costume Design and Score, while Jean Dujardin became the first Frenchman to pick up the coveted Best Actor award for his portrayal as silent film star George Valentin.

Meanwhile, Martin Scorsese's first 3D film Hugo picked up five of its 11 nominations in categories including Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Sound Mixing.

Other big winners at the 84th Academy Awards included Meryl Streep (Best Actress), Octavia Spencer (Best Supporting Actress), Woody Allen (Best Original Screenplay), Alexander Payne (Best Adapted Screenplay), Christopher Plummer, who, at 82, became the oldest actor ever to win an Academy Award, for his supporting role in Beginners, and A Separation, which became the first movie from Iran to win a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.

Billy Crystal returned to host the ceremony for the ninth time and kicked off the show with one of his famous movie montages, playing The Artist's leading man George Valentin in a silent torture scene and George Clooney's comatose partner in The Descendants.

The odd couple shared a kiss as the movie hunk and Oscar nominee woke the sleeping comic and told him he had to host the ceremony, joking, "The Academy has got the youngest, hippest writers in town."

Crystal also placed himself in scenes from The Help, Bridesmaids, The Adventures of Tin Tin, Moneyball and Midnight in Paris, where he doubled up as Sammy Davis Jr. opposite Justin Bieber.

There was also a cameo for Tom Cruise in a brief Mission: Impossible skit.

In his opening monologue, Crystal joked, "The movies have always been there for us... so tonight, enjoy yourself because nothing can take the sting out of the world's economic problems like watching millionaires present each other with golden statues."

Hugo Wins First Two Oscars

Hugo has won the first two Oscars at the 84th annual Academy Awards.

Robert Richardson won the night's first trophy for Best Cinematography and Tom Hanks also handed director Martin Scorsese's longtime production designer Dante Ferretti and set designer Francesca Lo Schiavo the Art Direction honour.

The 3D film led all nominations, going into the 2012 Oscars with 11.

Funnyman Billy Crystal kicked off his ninth stint as Oscars host with one of his famous movie montages, playing The Artist's George Valentin in a silent torture scene and George Clooney's comatose partner in The Descendants.

He then broke into song to poke fun at the nine nominated Best Film Oscars. »

Cohen Spills Ashes All Over Oscars Red Carpet

Funnyman Sacha Baron Cohen lived out his threat to arrive at the Oscars in character as The Dictator - and he dropped fake ashes all over the red carpet.

The comic turned up at the Academy Awards on Sunday as Admiral Aladeen, the leader of fictional country Wadiya, flanked by two busty beret-wearing, flower-wielding female soldiers.

Dressed all in white and wearing sunglasses and a bushy beard, Cohen's alter-ego carried an urn containing what he claimed were the remains of late North Korean leader Kim Jong-il as he chatted to the media, refusing to come out of character.

Talking about the contents of his gold jar, he joked, "It was his dream to come to the Oscars and to be sprinkled over the red carpet and over Halle Berry's chest."

Cohen caused a commotion just minutes after arriving, when he tipped the urn's ashes all over E!'s Live From The Red Carpet host Ryan Seacrest.

Bogus security guards pretended to escort him away as a bemused Seacrest told TV viewers, "Part of me thought he would be up to something... I had an idea something was coming."

Co-host Kelly Osbourne thought the moment was hilarious, stating, "Unbelievable... That was probably the most priceless moment on TV that I've shared with you ever."

Cohen, who was invited to the Oscars as part of the posse supporting Martin Scorsese's Hugo, had initially irked Oscars bosses when he announced his plans to promote his new film in character on the red carpet - but they agreed to let him continue with his plans after getting the lowdown on what he had in mind. »
